Open Food Facts' own label

If the product's own data has an explicit "halal" or "not halal / haram" label — and names the certifying body (JAKIM, MUIS, HFA, IFANCA, and others) — that's the answer, sourced directly from the packaging data itself.

Second opinion

Halal Scanner API

Only tried when the primary source has no label at all. An independent, community-run barcode/halal-status API gets a look-in — clearly marked "unofficial, community-sourced" in the result, since a second opinion isn't the same trust level as an explicit label.

Ingredient scan

Still nothing? The ingredients list gets scanned for common non-halal flags — pork, lard, gelatin, alcohol, wine, beer, bacon, ham, rum, ethanol. A flagged word isn't a yes/no on its own (gelatin can be plant, beef, or pork-derived) so this links straight to an ingredient-level checker to finish the job.
